Systems Design: The Ulm School and the Braum Company

This exhibition was the main exhibition of the Second Edition of MUGAK; the Basque Country International Architecture Biennial. The exhibition highlights the artistic and heritage contributions of the Ulm School of Architecture—founded in 1953 in that German city—a center that researched and developed urban planning, industrial architecture, product design, graphic design, and communication during the 1950s and 60s. It was a continuation and development of the Bauhaus Weimar-Dessau-Berlin, whose centenary is being celebrated this year. In fact, Ulm's first rector was Max Bill, a Swiss artist, architect, and designer who was also a Bauhaus.

Systems Design: The Ulm School and the Braum Company

The Ulm School applied the differentiating value of the idea to the intellectual and productive processes of architecture and industrial design. Therefore, its review and study today can serve as a useful example for improving and optimizing our models of thought and production.

Ulm ultimately influenced the planning, architecture, and design of the major German industrial brands we know today, as well as others, such as Apple. Steve Jobs himself acknowledged the German school's influence on the design of his products.

The exhibition took place in two locations and was hosted both in the Biennial's main building—the Convent of Santa Teresa in Donostia/San Sebastian—and in the San Telmo Museum (STM).
